Does it matter which Mobile Network Operator I use?
No it doesn't. The mobile service has been tested to run on every UK mobile phone network and several European networks. If your operator provides WAP services then you should be able to use this one.
Can the service be used on all Mobile Phones?
Not at the moment. Please see the full list of compatible phones under 'HELP' or 'GET IT' . We will regularly be adding support for new phone models.
Can I use this Mobile Service Abroad?
Yes. As long as your mobile operator supports SMS and WAP roaming you should be able to use this service abroad. You may need to enable your account for roaming. Please contact your network operator for details of which countries you can roam in.
How do I tell what mobile phone I have?
The model number is usually printed on your mobile phone battery.
How much will this service cost me?
You pay either £3.00 for one month or £4.50 for 3 months. Your network operator will also charge you for the data. These costs are very low since the application does not generate much data traffic. A heavy user will incur costs of approx £1-2/month.
What happens if I receive a call or alert whilst using this service?
Using GPRS for connectivity then your phone will still be able to receive inbound Voice and SMS traffic. The service will re-connect itself automatically once the call has been completed. This means that you will not miss a call even when you are in the middle of using the service.
I've heard that Vodafone UK are blocking access to certain sites, is this true?
Yes, Vodafone UK have implemented a Content Control system, which requires users to call them to lift the content bar for these sites. To get access call 191 from your Vodafone UK phone.
What are GSM and GPRS?
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications. GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service and is an 'always on' high-speed data service that operates alongside your network providers existing GSM network. It means you are charged for the quantity of data you download (in Mbytes) regardless of how long you are online.
Is GPRS the same as WAP?
No. WAP is an interface, GPRS is a data protocol. If you are in doubt please contact your network service provider.
What is Java?
Java is the programming language that the service is written in. Most new mobile phones now support Java applications. In most phone retail outlets or websites mobile phones are listed as supporting 'games'. This is referring to Java Games that can be downloaded to your phone.
What is WAP?
WAP is an interface language designed specifically for wireless devices. Its limitations are that you cannot automatically update information within the browser window without input from the user. The interface technology is similar to the web where all the information to be displayed is held on web servers and is downloaded when you enter a new page. This can be a drain on network connectivity as the speed at which graphical files are downloaded is quite slow.
Java or WAP, which is best?
Each has its own benefits and uses. This service uses Java because of its ability to communicate in real-time and to run the complex graphical elements locally on the phone therefore requiring less data to be transferred during use. This dramatically increases the usability of the service giving you a better experience.
